Losing Lena
Removing 1 image to help millions of women feel welcome in tech
Back in the 70’s, some guys at the University of Southern California used Lena, a Playboy centrefold model, to test their image processing algorithms. This research laid the groundwork for the JPEG, an image standard that revolutionised our digital world.
Today, with complete indifference to women, Lena remains the most used test image in the world.
Losing Lena is a documentary and activism campaign that seeks to remove this image from all universities, class rooms and tech companies in a bid to create a more equitable future for millions of women in tech.
